It was never just about travel.

For our family, safari was never something we booked. It was simply life.

Bee and Char have spent more than two decades living, working and travelling across East Africa. Between them, they have built a life shaped by the people, places and experiences that exist beyond the pages of a guidebook. North Node grew from that shared history and from a belief that Africa is best experienced with the people you love most.

Bee was born in Nairobi and grew up at The River House on the southern edge of Nairobi National Park. There was no fence along its boundary. Leopards wandered across the roof. Some mornings she arrived late to school because buffalo stood in the driveway, and at night she fell asleep to the sound of lions calling across the park. For her, this was simply home.

She was on safari before she could walk, joining Char in camp on relief management, sitting around fires with guests and moving through landscapes that most children only ever encounter in books. Raised between Kenya and Sydney, East Africa has remained a quiet thread running through Bee’s life. The safari bug, it seems, was inherited. Today, working alongside her Mama, North Node allows Bee to share her Kenya and the people and places that first taught her a sense of wonder.

Char arrived in Kenya alone at thirty-three, expecting a chapter and finding a decade. She worked for years within Nairobi's informal settlements on social issues before moving into the safari industry as a Sales & Marketing Manager with a leading luxury safari company. In creating journeys for international travellers and constantly seeking out the remote, the wild and the unexpected she discovered new camps, forged enduring relationships and pushed beyond the familiar safari circuit into the places that rarely make it into brochures.

The more she experienced East Africa, the more she realised that its greatest luxury was not exclusivity, but connection - to people, to landscape and to experiences that stayed with you long after you had returned home.

Returning to Sydney did not mean leaving East Africa behind. If anything, it marked the beginning of a new chapter. Together, Bee and Char continued building journeys for travellers, staying closely connected to the guides, camps, conservationists and communities that had become part of their own story. The conversations continue daily. The research never really stops. New camps are discovered, old friends are visited and the map of East Africa keeps unfolding.

North Node exists because we believe what East Africa gave our family, it can give yours too: a sense of wonder, a different pace and the kinds of shared experiences that become part of a family's own story for years to come.
